WHERE IS LA GRACIOSA?

La Graciosa is inside that paradise that are the Canary Islands. Specifically, it forms part of the Chinijo Archipelago, located to the northeast of Lanzarote, declared Natural Park in 1986 and to which also belong the islets of Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza. 'El Río', a sea space of one kilometer wide and few meters deep, is what separates La Graciosa from Lanzarote. However, in Líneas Romero we reunite them thanks to our ferries, which connect the towns of Caleta de Sebo (La Graciosa) and Órzola (Lanzarote).

In 2018 La Graciosa was recognized as the eighth inhabited island of the Canary Islands. However, it still depends administratively on Lanzarote and belongs to the province of Las Palmas. This small island has a total surface area of 29 km² and only two towns: Caleta del Sebo and Pedro Barba, where live less than 700 people.

HISTORY OF LA GRACIOSA

It was conquered in 1402 by Juan de Bethencourt, a Norman explorer who arrived under the command of Enrique III of Castile. Thus, it was proclaimed as one of the islands belonging to the Canary Islands, all under the command of the kingdom of Castile and León according to the Treaty of Alcázovas in 1479.

The origin of its name is unknown, but by several writings it can be affirmed that the name of La Graciosa existed long before Lanzarote became part of the kingdom of Castile. As for its formation, according to experts, it dates from the second effusive series of the Quaternary, due to the volcanic activity that arose from the waters of the ocean.

THE ANCESTORS

From ancient times, La Graciosa was a landing place, as a refuge for sailors who passed through the Archipelago. Moreover, according to Le Canarien, a manuscript written by the clergy who came on an expedition in 1402, it seems that the island was the base where the members of this expedition settled to make the first contact with the Lanzarote indians.

More recently, La Graciosa was the refuge of the Lanzarote people during the eruptions of Timanfaya, in 1730. It was also the place where they went to look for chicks of pardela -whose capture of this protected species is prohibited nowadays- rabbits, the cosco from which gofio was obtained, seafood and fish.

DREAM BEACHES

La Graciosa is a dream place for all lovers of the sea, since its perimeter hides wonderful virgin beaches. They cannot be missed.

LAS CONCHAS BEACH

In the northwest of the island we can find this beach that, without a doubt, is one of the favorites of all those who visit La Graciosa. It is not the most recommended for bathing, since its strong waves make it dangerous. However, the contrast of its turquoise water, white sand and red of Mount Bermeja, behind it, makes it almost mandatory to visit it and capture its beauty by photographing it.

LA FRANCESA BEACH

Located in the south of the island, it is the best beach for practicing snorkel, sunbathe on its white sand and take a dip in its turquoise calm waters. In addition, its views are impressive, since it is just in front of the Famara cliff, in Lanzarote.

Do you want to discover it? In Líneas Romero we offer you our excursion on the catamaran I love La Graciosa, in which you can enjoy this incredible beach practicing kayaking.

A TREASURE HIDDEN UNDER THE SEA

La Graciosa has a treasure under the sea. That is why it is framed within the Marine Reserve of the Chinijo Archipelago. With 70,700 hectares, it is the largest marine reserve in Europe and an area of exceptional landscape value.

This reserve houses the highest marine biodiversity in the Canary Islands. It was declared in 1995 with the aim of guaranteeing the sustainable exploitation of fishing resources. Among other protection measures, all kinds of marine fishing and extraction of live species are prohibited, with exceptions such as recreational fishing at a distance greater than 2 miles.

Although it also has a heliport, the island is only accessible from the sea. The ferries of La Graciosa of Líneas Romero are the best option to discover this treasure in the middle of the Atlantic.
