About the National Park of Lanzarote

The park is open all year round and summer months are generally the busiest, as it is high season. You can get to Timanfaya by car and can leave your car in the parking, as the visitors cannot explore the park independently. Also, a variety of guided tours are available with transport from popular resort areas on Lanzarote. If you are traveling from Fuerteventura, you can take a ferry to get to Lanzarote, also, there are delightful excursions available for those who want to get the complete volcan experience.

The guided coach tour is included in a small entrance fee and you can buy the tickets in advance to avoid the long lines during high season. Sightseen tours leave from central parking every 10 minutes.

We advise you to use suitable clothing and footwear, preferably hiking boots and breathable textile. Also, protect yourself with sunblock and a hat and always to carry water or sports drinks.

What to do in Timanfaya

Islet of Hilario

The area of Montañas del Fuego offers a special chance to feel the strength of the earth. The temperature of the surface there is so high that you can cook a fried egg simply by placing it on the ground. You can learn how the water rises, boiling, as a geyser. Now, there are hot spots on the surface that reach 120 degrees Celsius, experts say, and only 6 meters down under the surface, the temperature reaches several hundred degrees Celsius. It is a unique experience.

La Ruta de Los Volcanes

The tour that takes you to the most impressive volcanoes. The buses follow the narrow path that will take you through volcanic tubes, different types of lava landscapes and to one of the zones with the highest temperature – El Manto de la Virgen. Also, you will have the chance to climb to the top of Las Montañas de Fuego and admire the ‘Martian’ sceneries of Timanfaya. The route is around 14 kilometres and it leaves from the Islet of Hilario and is included in the price of the entrance to the Natural Park.

La Ruta del Litoral

A coastal route is an option for those adventurous souls who like discovering places on their own. It is a 20 kilometres long route outside of the Park that takes its start in the municipality of El Golfo. The path is magnificent, with the coastal lines of Atlantic on one side and volcanic landscapes on the other. The road is very easy to follow, and the marking of the protected area of Timanfaya National Park are well noticeable.

Camel ride through the lava

The most original way to discover Timanfaya National Park is a camel ride. Bring your experience to a new level with riding through a fascinating path, admiring the mysterious landscapes. The ride is very comfortable, as you will be seated in the ‘English chair’ – a simple wooden device that accommodates two riders at a time. You can start this tour in the tourist camel park.

Restaurant “El Diabolo”

This restaurant is the place to truly savour the volcan experience, as the meals are prepared on the grill powered only by the heat from the volcan throat below. Here, you can taste the traditional dishes of the archipelago with the panoramic view of the Park – the restaurant is located at the top of the Islote de Hilario, the tallest of the Fire Mountains (Montañas de Fuego).
